Anne Herriot (mother of Petera Ham)

As it nears the date of what would have been Pete’s 60th birthday, I am reminded of many happy memories and many tragic ones. Soon after I moved to London, I met Pete. He was a true friend and we got on great. He was such a lovely guy. So loyal and so honest. As our feelings grew he never wanted to reveal them for fear of breaking up a marriage. Soon, my marriage began to fail, and as I grew further from my husband, I grew closer to Pete.

When we became a couple, I couldn’t have asked for a more loving man or father for my son, Blair. He never fit the role of a rock star. He was more content sitting in a kitchen strumming his guitar than attending any showbiz parties, He loved his music, but was shy by nature. If he was recognized anywhere, he would hang his head in embarrassment. Our daughter Petera has the same expression even now. She is so like him. She loves nursing and helping old people. And Blair, he works with children from deprived families. I'm really proud of them, naturewise, they are both lovely - the two of them.

Petera, at first, could never understand why her father left us. As she grew and was more involved with her father's affairs, she found out about the cruel world of the music business.

She saw a former bandmate collecting an ASCAP award for the songwriters of "Without You," gloating in what should have been her and Tom Evans' son's glory, and though he knew of the mistake beforehand and afterwards, refusing to apologize, or even hand it back.

She has seen and heard the character assasinations of our family and Pete, and has now personally witnessed the terrible, disrespectful behavior of an ex-bandmate, herself.

She sees the deceptive recordings of Pete's material flooding the market that degrade the image of this glorious band he once founded.

She sees others making a living off of parts of Pete's writing royalties, yet ungratefully, they accept this money and try to trash others helpful and responsible for their own good fortune.

Soon she knew how he suffered till finally he could take no more. I was there. I saw how horribly Pete was treated and how difficult it all had become for him.

These acts of betrayal have devastated Petera, but friends were around to protect her. Friends like Bob Jackson who keeps Pete's true memory in people's minds, rather than the contorted rantings of people who seek to destroy his memory as they destroyed him. Friends like Dan Matovina who has helped us throughout the years in innumerable ways. I often wish these people were around to protect Pete when he was at his lowest ebb.

I only wish his fans knew the real Pete, the one I knew. The one who danced me around a crowded bar on hearing I was pregnant. The one who would go out to the car and run the heater before I drove it on wintery days.

Pete's loss was a loss for everyone he knew and for the music world. Who knows what marvellous songs he would have written had he lived? Happy Birthday, Pete, my love and my guardian angel. Petera knows you are with her and misses you, as does everyone who really knew you, and many who never met you, but knew your music.

I think of you often.

Anne.

It Doesn't Really Matter by Pete Ham

It doesn't really matter what you say
I'll always love you, anyway
The same as I love you today
There's nothing I can do

It doesn't really matter what you do
I'll always feel the same for you
And after all that we've been through
There's nothing I can do

There's nothing people say can change my mind
Although some things are so unkind
There's nothing they can do to stop me
Wanting you

And nothing that they say will make me feel
The love I have may not be real
I know my love is growing stronger
All the time

It doesn't really matter how they try
They'll never break up you and I
And though sometimes they'll make you cry
There's nothing they can do

It doesn't really matter how they sneer
You will always have me near
From day to day, and year to year
There's nothiing they can do

There's nothing people say can change my mind
Although some things are so unkind
There's nothing they can do to stop me
Wanting you

And nothing that they say will make me feel
The love I have may not be real
I know my love is growing stronger
All the time
